The Vermont Returnship Program

The Vermont Returnship Program, which was developed collaboratively between A4TD and the Vermont Department of Labor, connects employers with experienced workers who are looking for new opportunities. A returnship is a limited-duration on-the-job work experience, similar to an internship, designed specifically for adults with previous experience in the workplace who have taken time away from their careers and seek to reenter the workforce. Returnships are approximately three weeks in length, during which time, participants receive a stipend from A4TD and are covered for workers’ compensation insurance. The Vermont Returnship Program helps people identify their transferrable skills, job goals, and training needs, then matches them with quality employers. This program also provides opportunities for those who are currently in the workforce, but are looking for a career change to stay in the workforce.

How does it work?

Returnships are intended for adults who already have work experience and are interested in a trial period which will lead to a permanent role in the workforce. The A4TD team will connect directly with individuals after they apply for the program! Program participants receive assessments and career counseling that help them identify their transferrable skills, job goals, and training needs.

A4TD works with employers to develop opportunities for returnships that attract high caliber talent, and match employers and participants together! A4TD staff help with logistics for each returnship, which is customized to suit the participant / employer pair. Returnships are approximately three weeks in length with a paid stipend provided by A4TD. Neither the employer, nor the participant are required to commit to placement after the returnship, though it is intended that each match results in a fulfilling employment opportunity!

This program is funded by the Vermont Department of Labor, whose mission is to promote Vermont’s economic strength by assisting employers with job creation, retention and recruitment; coordinating the education and training of our workforce for Vermont’s current and future job opportunities; ensuring that Vermont workers have well-paying jobs in safe work environments; administering economic support and reemployment assistance to workers who suffer a job loss or workplace injury; and providing labor market information and analysis to enable effective planning and decision-making relating to economic, education, labor and employment policies and direction. Equal Opportunity is the Law.
