It’s never too late to rewrite your story. Whether you’ve been out of the workforce for a few months or many years, returning can feel daunting—especially if you’re over 55 and facing barriers that others don’t. But there is a path forward, one grounded in purpose, support, and real opportunity.
At A4TD, we believe in the value of experience. The later chapters of a person’s working life can be just as meaningful—and just as vital—as the earlier ones. That’s why we offer the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP): a federally funded employment and training program designed for older job seekers who are ready to return to work, rebuild their confidence, and refresh their skills.
Is SCSEP Right for You?
SCSEP is not a one-size-fits-all solution. It’s a focused, purposeful program for individuals who need a genuine opportunity to re-enter the workforce. You may qualify if you:
- Are 55 or older
- Have a household income at or below 125% of the federal poverty level
- Are unemployed and legally authorized to work in the United States
- Reside in one of A4TD’s service areas: Maine, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, or Connecticut
- Face additional challenges to employment—such as limited education, a disability, language barriers, or other personal circumstances
If this sounds like you, you’re not alone. Importantly, receiving unemployment benefits does not automatically disqualify you. However, it’s a good idea to consult with your local unemployment office to understand how SCSEP participation might affect your benefits.
What Happens After You Enroll?
SCSEP doesn’t simply place you in a job—it builds a bridge to long-term, meaningful employment.
Once enrolled, you’ll be placed in a part-time, paid training position at a nonprofit or public agency in your community. You’re not volunteering; you’re training. This is practical, hands-on work that builds your skills and helps you stay active while earning a wage.
From the start, you’ll work with a dedicated case manager who helps you create a personalized employment plan. This plan is designed around your individual goals and abilities, guiding your training experience and helping you stay on track.
You’ll also receive access to:
- Skills training, including computer use, resume writing, and interview preparation
- Job search assistance
- Networking opportunities with fellow participants, community members, and potential employers
This isn’t busywork. It’s structured, goal-oriented support that helps you develop the tools, confidence, and experience needed to transition into unsubsidized employment.
More Than a Job—A Fresh Start
SCSEP is about more than earning a paycheck. It’s about reclaiming your sense of purpose, your independence, and your ability to contribute meaningfully to your community and the workforce.
We’ve seen older adults walk into this program uncertain, discouraged, and unsure of what comes next—and walk out with renewed confidence and a clear direction. SCSEP with A4TD is a second chance wrapped in structure, support, and belief in your potential.
If you’re ready to take that next step, we’re ready to walk it with you.
Because experience never goes out of style.
Let us help you put yours to work.
